CHAPTER 1
It is Monday morning. It is a warm sunny day. There are clouds in the sky.
Elm street is already busy at eight o'clock in the morning. Many people are on the street. Mike Stewart is not. He is in his bedroom.
Mrs. Stewart: Mike!
Mike: Yes, Mom.
Mrs. Stewart: where are you?
Mike: Right here, mom. By the window.
Mrs. Stewart: Time for your medicine
Mike: Oh, No! Not again.
Mrs. Stewart: Of Course. It’s nine o’clock.
Now it is ten o’clock in the morning and Mike is still at the window.
Elm street is very, very busy at this time. There are cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles on the street.
The drugstore on the corner is crowded. There is a bus at the bus stop in front of the drugstore. Many people are at the bus stop.
Mr. Harris is in his garage. He is bob’s father and he is a mechanic. There are two cars, a small truck, and an old motorcycle in his garage. Mr. Harris is under the small truck.
Mrs. Benson is jack’s mother. She is in her garden.
Mrs. Elliott and her baby are on the sidewalk. Mrs Elliott is Sylvia’s mother.
Mike’s house is between Sylvia’s house and Bob’s house.
There is an old abandoned house between Jack’s house and the garage. At the fifteen a big truck is in front of the old house. There are chairs, a table, and old piano on the truck. A very old man is near the truck.
Mr. Tennison, the mailman, is very busy this morning. There are many letters, postcards, and magazines in his bag. He is in front of Mike’s home.
Mr. Tennison: Hi, Mike
Mike: Hello, Mr. Tennison!
Mr. Tennison: No school today?
Mike: No, I’m sick this morning
Mr. Tennison: Too bad
Mike: That’s okay, Mr. Tennison. I’m better now
Mr. Tennison: Good. Here, two letters for your father and a postcard for you.
Mike: Thanks.
Mr. Tennison: Are There new people moving into the old house? A new family?
Mike: No, just an old man.
Mr. Tennison: Just one old man in that big house?... Strange, very strange.
Mike: Yes, there are old things on the truck. Old chairs, an old table, and an old piano.
Mr. Tennison: Look, Mike! The old man is coming out of the house now.
Mike: Yes, hes is really very strange.

At three o’clock in the afternoon, Bob, Jack, and Sylvia are in Mike’s Bedroom. Mike is much Better and very happy because he is not alone now. All his friends are happy, too.
Bob: Hi Mike!
Mike: Hi, Bob! Hello, everybody!
Sylvia: How are you now?
Mike: I’m fine. I’m better.
Jack: that´s good.
Mike: What about school today?
Bob: Bad as always.
Mike: Any news?
Sylvia: There is good news and bad news.
Mike: The bad news first.
Sylvia: There is a geography test the after tomorrow.
Mike: Oh, no!... Well, what about the good news.
Bob: There is no homework for tomorrow.
Mike: No homework? That’s great! Well, people. I have news for you, too. Good news.
Sylvia: What is it? I’m so curious.
Mike: Remember the old house? There is an old man there now.
Bob: Just an old house? What about his family?
Mike: No family. Just an old man in that house. Isn’t it strange?
Jack: Yes, very.
Mike: And he is very weird with his dark clothes. Oh, and there is a black cat, too.
Sylvia: Oh, my! Maybe he’s a wizard!
Mike: or a crook.
Bob: What’s the idea, Mike?
Mike: An investigation.
Jack: Wow! Great!
Mike: Let’s make a plan.
Bob: Yes, let’s.
It is eight - thirty in the evening now. Elm Street is very quiet at this time. It is a warm night, but not many people are out in the street. There are no stars in the sky, and no moon. It is a very dark night.
Mike is at his bedroom window.
There are lights on in Mr. X’s home. He is at the piano, playing. The song is soft and beautiful.
Suddenly, a black van stops in front of the old house. There are a man, a woman, and a boy in the van.
Mr. X opens the front door and goes to the van. He runs to the house with the boy in his arms. A minute later Elm Street is quiet and empty.
Mike is very curious.
CHAPTER 3

At nine - thirty Jack is in a tree near the wall between his house and the old house. It is very dark there, so it is difficult to see anything.
Jack looks at the old house. There is a light on in the bedroom now. Mr X is in the bedroom. There is another person there, too. But who is it? An old woman? Another old? Maybe it is a boy.
Two minutes later, Jack is not in the tree. He is on top of the wall, but he cannot see much. Then, he jumps off the wall.
Now he is in Mr X‘s yard. He goes to the window. What a surprise! There is a boy on the bed. There is medicine on the nightstand. Mr. X is in a chair near the bed.
Suddenly, there is a noise in the yard. It is a dog. A big black dog.
Jack runs to the wall. He tries to jump over the wall, but he falls.
The dog is very near the boy. Jack jumps again. It is too late. The dog bites a hole in his pants.
The next day, at two o’clock in the afternoon, bob is busy with his investigation. He is at his window with a pair of binoculars.
Sylvia is always very busy in the afternoon. She góes to her spanish classes on Mondays and Wednesdays. Her ballet classes are on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and there is a girl scout meeting on Fridays.
Today is Tuesday, but Sylvia is not at her ballet class. She is busy with her investigation. She is at the drugstore on the corner.
Sylvia: Hello, Mr. Wilson!
Mr Wilson: Oh, hello, Sylvia. How are you?
Sylvia: Fine, sir.
Mr Wilson: So, what’s new?
Sylvia: Mr. X.
Mr Wilson: Mr. X? Who is this Mr. X?
Sylvia: The old man in the old house.
Mr Wilson: Oh, Mr. Mac Donald?
Sylvia: Mr. Mac Donald?
Mr Wilson: Yes, that is his name.
Sylvia: Is that right? Are you sure, Mr. Wilson?
Mr Wilson: Sure, I am sure.
Sylvia: Oh, great! Thanks, Mr. Wilson
Mr Wilson: Hey, wait! Wait a minute, Sylvia! What´s the hurry?
Sylvia: Now I have the name, Mr Wilson! The name! Thank you. Good bye!
It is after dinner now, and the kids are in Mike’ s room again. The conversation is about their investigation. Jack is by the window.
Mike: What’s that?
Bob: The brakes of a car.
Jack: Look!
Sylvia: What?
Jack: A police car. Look!
The kids run to the window. The police car is in front of the old house. Mr. X is in the back seat. A policeman and Mr. X go in the house.
Mike: Hmm... Mr. X and the police... very suspicious.
Jack: Maybe it is an investigation, too.
Bob: Maybe Mr. X is a Kidnapper.
Sylvia: Hey, boys, look! Look at the window of the old house!

Wednesday morning is not very beautiful. It is cloudy and a little windy.
Mike is not sick today. At twelve - thirty, he and his friends are on Elm Street. They are on their way home from school.
Suddenly, there is a surprise for the children.
Jack: Hey, Look!
Bob: Where?
Jack: Over there at sylvia’s house.
Sylvia: It’s my mother. What’s the problem?
Mike: Yes, it’s your mother, but what about the man in dark clothes?
Bob: Who’s that man?
Mike: Mr. X of course!

The kids run to Sylvia’ house, but the man in dark clothes is not there now. Only Mrs. Elliott is in the front yard. The kids are very frightened.
Sylvia: Mom, are you all right?
Mrs. Elliott: Yes, I am. You are all so excited.What’s the problem?
Jack: The old man. He is dangerous, Mrs. Elliott.
Mrs. Elliott: I...
Sylvia: Maybe he is a crook.

Bob: Maybe he is a wizard, Mom.

Mike: I’m sure he is a kidnapper, Mrs. Elliott.

At 8:00 p.m. on Thursday evening, Mike and his friends are at party in Mr, Mac Donald’s house.
Alex is happy now because he is not sick and because there are friends in the neighborhood.
Mike and his friends are happy, too. But there are still some questions.
Mike: What about the black van, Alex?
Alex: That’s my father’s van.
Sylvia: And the two people in the van?
Alex: Oh, they are my Mom and Dad.
Mr. Mac Donald: Are you satisfied, Kids?
Mike: Yes, very. Just one more question, Mr. Mac Donald. What about the shot and the terrible scenes behind the curtain?
Mr. Mac Donald: Shot? Your imagination is fantastic, my boy.
